Sooner or later every eastern fly fisherperson makes a pilgrimage to Pulaski New York, the mecca of Great Lakes steelhead fishing.
Every fall, giant chinook salmon come up from Lake Ontario to spawn in the eponymous Salmon River and other less well known streams. Steelhead follow them, feeding voraciously on the eggs.
Generally, I've found this to be a rather unpleasant experience. During the run, the rivers are packed with fishermen, many arriving in the dark of night to stake out prime locations on the bank. It's like a giant tailgate party. Every once in a while, something looking like a huge log floats past you downstream - the rotting (and stinking) carcass of a chinook. You need to fiddle endlessly with split shot to get your fly down to just the right depth, and because the steelhead are wary, 5X tippet is the order of business.
