I am currently updating my fly fishing equipment. I bought my 'used' Okuma SLV rod from Amazon for next-to-nothing. It deserves every bit of the 5-star rating that I gave it. The writeups that Amazon presents for the Okuma SLV and the Crisium rods are wrong, inaccurate if you think wrong is too strong. I went onto the Akuma site to get information about these 2 rods. However, I'm only going to write about the SLV rod.
Compared to my 25 year old rod the SLV rod is astounding. It's a single wt. rod, not the dual wt. 5/6 wt. rod that Amazon advertized. It is a medium-fast rod which means that you can cast much farther than with a medium rod and, it's going to be hard for many beginner fishermen to control the cast. A little practice will change that. Personally, I've been piling alot of line on top of my flies lately. I'm used to a moderate rod. This rod is going to be dynamite when I get used to it.
I paired the rod with an Okuma 5/6 wt. SLV reel. The combination of the rod...Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice!!!, June 5, 2011
This review is from: Okuma SLV Fly Rod (Sports)
I bought the 8' 3-weight specifically for interior Alaska river grayling. I did so only after weeks of research and comparison. I had never used a fly rod under a 5 weight before but had seen folks use 3 and 4 weights of various makes. Most often than not, they were 6.5' and 7' foot rods that did not cast very well, especially on windy days. To be fair, mine struggles on very windy days as most rods do, but not like the others. I'm convinced that it's the extra length and moderate fast action. I topped mine with a matching Okuma SLV 2-3 reel. This combo is extremely light and casts like a dream! Thus far it has handled over 200 grayling up to 15", many in fast water. Wow, talk about fun! There is nothing fancy about this rod. The cork, reel seat, snake guides and blank are all basic but fully functional. I have used mine at least 20 times and haven't had a problem, and have seen nothing to indicate I won't be using this rod for many years to come. A very good product at...Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Review of SLV fly rod, June 26, 2011

Excellent flyrod, I am an avid fisherman and own several fly rods. For the price paid, I am very pleased with the rod. It compares favorably with rods that I paid much more for.
